With great self-control I have resisited the urge to edit. The essays must stand as they were written. For instance: my opinions of Zapatista's as DF intellectuals and Octavio Paz and Carlos Fuentes, as written in April 1998, are somewhat off the mark. DF intellectuals, among many others, do indeed support the EZLN. As for Paz's and Fuentes's official superannuation, it is true and they are more gringo than mexicano. But their "los trabajos de su vida" stand. I now have richer insight, no doubt because of my latin sojourn.
As for my students speaking "inglese". I don't know how I pursuaded my self that they could. Certainly it was a graduate school requirement. I do know I had to learn "espanole" pretty damn fast to communicate!
